5G UW, 5G UC and 5G+ meaning: what each carrier's icon says

5G UW is Verizon's Ultra Wideband tier, 5G UC is T-Mobile's Ultra Capacity tier and 5G+ is AT&T's faster tier. Here is what each carrier says the icons mean.

5G UW means your phone is on Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband network, and 5G UC means it is on T-Mobile's Ultra Capacity 5G. Both are the faster layer of each carrier's 5G. A plain "5G" icon means the carrier's wider-coverage layer: 5G Nationwide on Verizon, Extended Range 5G on T-Mobile. AT&T uses "5G+" for its faster tier.

Icon Carrier What the carrier says it is
5G UW Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband, shown when you are in an active coverage area
5G Verizon 5G Nationwide, the standard 5G network
5G UC T-Mobile Ultra Capacity 5G, on mid-band and/or high-band (mmWave) frequencies
5G T-Mobile Extended Range 5G, on low-band frequencies, the base of its nationwide 5G
5G+ AT&T The faster tier of AT&T 5G
5G AT&T The broad-coverage 5G on low-band spectrum

What does 5G UW mean on my iPhone or Android phone?

Verizon's support page says that when you are in an active coverage area, you see the 5G Ultra Wideband (UW) icon in the status bar. If you only see "5G," you are on its standard 5G Nationwide network. The "UW" tells you the phone is using Verizon's Ultra Wideband spectrum.

The icon follows the carrier's network, so the label means the same on an iPhone and an Android phone. Verizon's page says most modern smartphones, including the iPhone 12 and newer and the Galaxy S21 and newer, support the network.

Verizon also sells access to 5G Ultra Wideband as an optional paid add-on on its Unlimited Welcome plan, which means your plan can decide which icon you are allowed to see. Check whether your phone works on Verizon before you assume a missing UW icon is a phone problem.

What is the difference between 5G UC and 5G?

T-Mobile says 5G UC stands for Ultra Capacity, the part of its 5G network that uses mid-band and/or high-band (mmWave) frequencies. It describes regular 5G on T-Mobile as usually meaning Extended Range 5G, which uses low-band spectrum and forms the foundation of its nationwide coverage in big cities, rural towns and places between.

In T-Mobile's words, 5G UC is the faster-capacity layer and Extended Range 5G is the broader-coverage layer. T-Mobile says most 5G phones can use both. It also says actual speed still depends on your device, location and network conditions, so the icon tells you which layer you are on, not a speed.

What is the difference between 5G UC and 5G UW?

They are each a carrier's name for its faster layer on top of a wider one. 5G UC belongs to T-Mobile and 5G UW belongs to Verizon. Your phone shows the one that matches the network it is connected to, so a phone on Verizon will never show 5G UC.

The icon follows the network your phone is connected to, not the logo on your bill.

What is the difference between 5G UC and 5G+?

5G+ is AT&T's label, not T-Mobile's. AT&T's business page says plain 5G offers broad coverage over low-band spectrum, while 5G+ is the faster option. AT&T describes 5G+ as reaching average speeds up to 3 times its 4G LTE in major metro areas and peak speeds up to 10 times faster than its 4G LTE in parts of select venues. It also says 5G+ uses high-band millimeter wave and is available in parts of 35 U.S. cities. Those are AT&T's claims about its own network.

So 5G UC (T-Mobile) and 5G+ (AT&T) are both the faster tier from their carrier. Neither icon is a promise of one speed everywhere.

Why does the icon change when I move?

Each carrier ties the fast icon to coverage. Verizon says you see UW when you are in an active coverage area. T-Mobile says the 5G UC icon shows up when your device is in an Ultra Capacity area. Walk out of that area and the phone drops to the wider layer, so the icon goes back to plain 5G.

That is also why two people on the same carrier can see different icons at the same moment. Verizon's 5G page links its coverage map, and T-Mobile explains how to check 5G UC coverage for your address.

Does my phone show these icons?

Check three things.

  1. The phone supports 5G on that carrier. Verizon names the iPhone 12 and newer and the Galaxy S21 and newer for its Ultra Wideband network. T-Mobile says most 5G phones can use both of its layers. AT&T says 5G requires a compatible plan and device.
  2. The phone is unlocked or bought from that carrier. If you bought it elsewhere, read unlocked vs carrier phones first.
  3. Your plan includes the fast tier. On Verizon's Unlimited Welcome plan, Ultra Wideband is a paid add-on, as noted above.

If the icon never appears where the carrier's map says it should, update the phone's software and restart it, then ask the carrier about your plan.
