Samsung Galaxy A17 5G: updates to 2031 for $269.99

The Galaxy A17 5G is the budget phone to pick if you want years of security updates and a phone that every national carrier sells: Samsung's support runs to August 2031, more than two years past the Motorola phones it competes with. It is a weaker fit if you want the most RAM or the fastest wired charging at this price, and it no longer costs the $199.99 it launched at.

We haven't held a Galaxy A17 5G; this page compares Samsung's published specifications and update policy with the phones it sits next to on the shelf.

Price: launched at $199.99, now $269.99

Samsung started US sales of the A17 5G on January 7, 2026, at $199.99, through AT&T, T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, Verizon and Samsung Experience Stores. It has raised the price since. On October 15, 2026, samsung.com listed it at $269.99 with no sale running.

That increase matters more at this price than on a flagship, because it closes most of the gap to the next phone up. It is one of several post-launch increases we track in why phones cost more in 2026.

What the next model up adds

For a buyer, the useful question is what the Galaxy A27 5G adds, since it is the next Samsung up and costs $379.99 at list (it launched at $349.99 in July 2026).

  • Screen: both have a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED panel, at 90 Hz on the A17 and 120 Hz on the A27.
  • Chip and memory: the A17 uses an Exynos 1330 with 4GB of RAM; the A27 a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 with 6GB.
  • Battery and charging: both list 5,000 mAh and 25W wired.
  • Cameras: the same on paper, a 50MP main, 5MP ultra wide and 2MP macro.
  • Water resistance: IP54 on the A17, IP64 on the A27.
  • Updates: August 2031 on the A17, July 2032 on the A27.
  • Carriers: the A17 is sold by all three national carriers. The A27 isn't on AT&T's Samsung list, and we found no Verizon or T-Mobile listing for it.

The A27 buys a faster screen refresh, more RAM and about a year more support. The A17 is the one you can walk into a carrier store and buy.

Screen and battery on paper

The 6.7-inch Super AMOLED screen refreshes at up to 90 Hz. The two Motorola phones it competes with, the moto g 2026 and moto g play 2026, use 6.7-inch LCD panels at 120 Hz. AMOLED and LCD are different panel technologies, but which one looks better to you is not something a spec sheet settles.

The battery is 5,000 mAh. Samsung's US newsroom gives no minimum rated capacity for this model, so 5,000 mAh is the only figure we have. Both Motorola phones list 5,200 mAh. Wired charging is 25W, between the moto g 2026 at 30W and the moto g play 2026 at 18W.

Storage is 128GB with no larger option, and there is a microSD slot that takes cards up to 2TB. If you keep a lot of photos and video on the phone, a card is the cheap way to add room.

Cameras by specification

The A17 has three rear cameras: a 50MP main, a 5MP ultra wide and a 2MP macro. It is the only phone of the three compared here with an ultra wide. The moto g 2026 has a 50MP main and a 2MP macro, and the moto g play 2026 has a single 32MP camera.

That tells you what kinds of shots each can take, not how good they look. We don't rank photo quality from the hardware list.

Updates: to August 2031

Samsung's US newsroom promises six years of security updates and six generations of One UI and Android upgrades for the A17 5G. The detail that matters is when the clock started. Samsung's US product page counts from the global manufacture date in the third quarter of 2025, not the January 2026 US launch, and its spec tab gives August 2031 as the end of security updates.

So from the US launch, the real window is about five and a half years. If you buy in October 2026, you get a little under five years of security patches. That is still far longer than the moto g 2026 and moto g play 2026, whose security updates stop in December 2028 under Motorola's published schedule, with no count of Android upgrades published for either.

Carriers and eSIM

The A17 5G works on AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, and each sold it from the US launch. Samsung.com sells unlocked, Verizon and T-Mobile versions. It takes a nano-SIM and an eSIM, supports two eSIMs, and still has the microSD slot alongside them.

A carrier version can be cheaper upfront but may come locked to that network for a period. Our explainer on unlocked vs carrier phones covers the trade-off.

Water resistance is rated IP54, which covers splashes rather than submersion. The two Motorola phones have no IP rating at all; Motorola describes them as having a water-repellent design.

  • moto g 2026: launched at $199.99 in December 2025. On October 15, 2026, motorola.com sold it at $249.99, a sale price against a $299.99 list. It has a 120 Hz LCD, 5,200 mAh, 30W charging, 4GB of RAM and 128GB, but no ultra wide camera, and security updates end in December 2028.
  • moto g play 2026: launched at $169.99 in November 2025 and on sale for $199.99 on October 15, 2026 (list $249.99). It has only 64GB of storage, a single 32MP camera and 18W charging, with security updates to December 2028.
  • Galaxy A27 5G: $379.99 list. A 120 Hz screen, 6GB of RAM and updates to July 2032, but limited carrier availability.

On paper the A17 5G gives you the longest support of the three phones in its price range, an AMOLED screen and an ultra wide camera, and it costs more than the Motorola pair on October 15 prices. Our budget phone shortlist sets it against the other cheap phones we considered.
