The Samsung Galaxy S26 is the best small phone on paper. It has a 6.3-inch screen, weighs 167 g, has three rear cameras including a 3x telephoto, and Samsung promises seven years of OS and security updates, through February 2033. It cost $999.99 on samsung.com on October 15, 2026, up from $899.99 at its March 2026 launch.

If you use an iPhone, get the iPhone 17: 6.3 inches, 177 g, $899 on apple.com. If weight matters most, the motorola edge 2026 is the lightest phone here at 160.5 g.

How we picked

Our cutoff for "small" is a screen of 6.3 inches or less. Within that, we compared weight, since every maker publishes it. Google's US pages give weight in ounces, so for Pixels we use the gram figures from Google's UK spec pages. Eleven phones we track fit the cutoff, and all eleven work on at least two of the three national carriers and are sold new, as the rules on our how we research page require.

The update rule needs a note. Apple doesn't publish a fixed number of years of updates for any iPhone, so iPhones pass only on Apple's public track record; our guide on which iPhone to buy explains that exception. Every Android phone here has at least three years of promised security updates.

We haven't held any of these phones. The figures come from the makers' spec sheets, support pages and stores. Each card shows the launch price, and the text gives the maker's own price on October 15.

Galaxy S26: the best small phone overall

The S26 has a 6.3-inch 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED screen, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, IP68, and a 50MP main, 12MP ultra wide and 10MP 3x telephoto camera. Among the phones here with a telephoto lens, only the motorola edge weighs less.

The weak spot is battery. Samsung lists 4,300 mAh, the smallest of any Android phone in this group, with 25W wired charging. Samsung's regular price is $999.99, though samsung.com had it on sale for $899.99 on October 15. Our Galaxy S26 vs Pixel 11 comparison weighs it against Google's phone of the same size.

iPhone 17: the best small iPhone

The iPhone 17 cost $899 on apple.com on October 15, up from $799 at its September 2025 launch. That price includes a $30 discount for activating with AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon; unlocked it is $929. It has a 6.3-inch 120Hz screen, the A19 chip, 256GB of storage and two 48MP rear cameras, a main and an ultra wide. Apple rates it for up to 30 hours of video playback, and it weighs 177 g.

There is no telephoto, and Apple doesn't publish battery capacity in mAh, so it can't be lined up against the Android phones on that number.

Pixel 11: a bigger battery and a longer zoom

The Pixel 11 costs $899 on the Google Store, its August 2026 launch price. Google lists a typical 4,985 mAh battery, well above the S26's 4,300 mAh, and a 5x telephoto camera, a longer reach than the S26's 3x. The cameras are a 48MP wide, a 13MP ultrawide and that 10.8MP telephoto.

Google promises seven years of OS and security updates, through about August 2033. The trade-off is weight: at 197 g it is 30 g heavier than the S26. It runs Google's Tensor G6 with 12GB of RAM and starts at 256GB.

motorola edge 2026: the lightest phone here

At 160.5 g, the edge is the lightest phone in this group, and it still lists a 5,000 mAh battery, 60W wired and 15W wireless charging, and IP68/IP69 ratings. It has three rear cameras: a 50MP main, a 50MP ultrawide/macro and a 10MP 3x telephoto.

It launched at $599.99 in June 2026. On October 15, motorola.com had it on sale for $499.99, with the list price still at $599.99. The cost is support: Motorola promises two Android upgrades and lists security updates through June 2029, three years from launch. That is the shortest promise of any Android phone here.

iPhone 17e: the cheapest small iPhone

The 17e cost $699 on apple.com on October 15, up from $599 at its March 2026 launch. It has a 6.1-inch OLED screen, the same A19 chip as the iPhone 17, 256GB of storage, and a single 48MP rear camera. It weighs 169 g, and Apple rates it for up to 26 hours of video playback, according to Apple's iPhone 17e spec page.

Apple lists no refresh rate for its screen; MacRumors reports 60Hz, against 120Hz on the iPhone 17. If you can live with that and a single camera, it is the least expensive small iPhone we track.

iPhone 18 Pro: the most camera in a small body

The iPhone 18 Pro costs $1,199, its September 2026 launch price. It has three 48MP rear cameras, including a 4x telephoto equal to a 100 mm lens, and a main camera with a variable aperture. It runs the A20 Pro, and Apple rates it for up to 36 hours of video playback, six more than the iPhone 17.

It is also the heaviest phone here at 211 g. Our iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 comparison looks at whether those cameras are worth the gap. On the Android side, the Pixel 11 Pro ($1,099) is the same size, weighs 204 g, and has a 48MP 5x telephoto with seven years of updates.

What we left out and why

  • iPhone 16. It has the same 6.1-inch screen size as the 17e and weighs 170 g, but it costs $799 for 128GB against $699 for the 17e's 256GB. Its advantages are a 12MP ultra wide camera and MagSafe charging up to 25W against the 17e's 15W.
  • Google Pixel 10a. At 6.3 inches and 183 g, with a 5,100 mAh battery and seven years of updates, it was a close call. It launched at $499, but Google raised it to $599 in October. Our Pixel 10a overview covers it.
  • Google Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro. Both are previous-generation models with many versions out of stock on the Google Store on October 15. The Pixel 10 costs $799 and weighs 204 g, heavier than the newer Pixel 11.
  • iPhone Air. At 165 g it is light, but its 6.5-inch screen is over our size cutoff.
  • Galaxy S26 FE and Nothing Phone (3). Their screens are 6.7 and 6.67 inches.
