Galaxy S26 Ultra: what $1,399.99 buys on paper
Samsung's top S26 now lists at $1,399.99, $100 above launch, with seven years of updates. What the Ultra adds over the S26 and S26+, and who can skip it.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra buys the biggest screen, the largest battery, the fastest wired charging and the only 5x telephoto camera in Samsung's S26 line, for $1,399.99 at the maker's regular price. If you do not need those four things, the S26 or S26+ gives you the same chip and the same seven-year update promise for $200 to $400 less.
Samsung launched the Ultra on March 11, 2026 at $1,299.99. The maker listed it at $1,399.99 on October 15, 2026, a $100 increase. On that day samsung.com also showed a sale: the 256GB model at $1,199.99, $200 off, and a Samsung promotion of up to $350 off select S26 Ultra units that runs October 13 to 19. The sale is temporary, so the regular price is the one to plan around.
The numbers on paper
The Ultra has a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen at 120Hz, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chip, 12GB of RAM and 256GB of base storage. Storage goes to 512GB and 1TB; the 1TB model has 16GB of RAM. The battery is 5,000 mAh typical and wired charging runs at up to 60W. It weighs 214 grams and is rated IP68.
The rear cameras are a 200MP main, a 50MP ultra wide, a 10MP 3x telephoto and a 50MP 5x telephoto. Regular samsung.com prices were $1,399.99 for 256GB, $1,599.99 for 512GB and $1,999.99 for 1TB.

All three share the chip, 12GB of RAM, a Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen at 120Hz, an IP68 rating and a 256GB base. The differences are size, battery, charging and cameras.
Screen and weight. The S26 has a 6.3-inch screen and weighs 167 grams. The S26+ has 6.7 inches and weighs 190 grams. The Ultra has 6.9 inches and weighs 214 grams. That is 47 grams more than the smallest model. If you want a phone that is easy to use one-handed, the Ultra is the wrong end of the line; the Galaxy S26 is the small one.
Battery and charging. Typical battery sizes are 4,300 mAh on the S26, 4,900 mAh on the S26+ and 5,000 mAh on the Ultra. Wired charging is 25W, 45W and 60W respectively. The jump from S26+ to Ultra is small on battery and 15W on charging. The jump from the S26 is larger on both.
Cameras. The S26 and S26+ list a 50MP main, a 12MP ultra wide and a 10MP 3x telephoto. The Ultra swaps in a 200MP main and a 50MP ultra wide and adds a 50MP 5x telephoto. This is the clearest reason to pay more. A longer zoom is something the other two do not have at all. We have not used any of the three, so we cannot say how the pictures differ.
Price. Regular prices on October 15 were $999.99 for the S26 (launched at $899.99), $1,199.99 for the S26+ (launched at $1,099.99) and $1,399.99 for the Ultra. Each rose by $100. The S26 had a sale at $899.99 that day.
Updates and carriers
Samsung promises seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from the global launch date, and the samsung.com/us Specs tab puts the end at February 28, 2033. The S26 and S26+ carry the same promise, so updates are not a reason to choose the Ultra. See how long phones get updates for how that compares with other brands.
AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile are all marked as supported. Samsung.com sells Unlocked, Verizon and T-Mobile versions; read unlocked vs carrier phones before choosing. The Ultra takes a nano-SIM plus an eSIM and supports dual eSIM.
Who should buy it
The Ultra makes sense if you shoot often at a distance and want the 5x telephoto, if you keep phones for the full seven years and want the largest battery, or if you plan to buy 512GB or 1TB and use the extra RAM that comes with the top tier. It also suits people who like a big screen and do not mind the weight.
Stop at the S26+ if you want a large screen and a bigger battery but will not use the zoom. It is $200 cheaper at regular prices and 24 grams lighter. Stop at the S26 if you want a compact phone: at $999.99 it is $400 below the Ultra, with the same chip and the same promise on updates.
The price rise is part of a wider pattern, covered in why phones cost more in 2026.
Bottom line
On paper the Ultra is the most capable S26, and Samsung has priced it that way. The $400 over the S26 pays for 0.6 inches of screen, 700 mAh of battery, 35W more charging and a second telephoto lens. Whether those are worth it is a question about how you use a phone, and the spec sheet cannot answer that for you. If the October sale is still running when you read this, the effective gap shrinks by $200.
