iPhone 17 vs Pixel 11: which $899 phone to buy
Both cost $899 on their makers' stores in October 2026. We compare cameras, updates, battery, charging and carriers on paper to show who should buy which.

Buy the Pixel 11 if you want a zoom lens and a written update promise. It has a 5x telephoto camera that the iPhone 17 lacks, and Google commits to 7 years of Android and security updates, through about August 2033. Buy the iPhone 17 if you already own a Mac, an iPad or an Apple Watch, or if most people you text are on iMessage. It's also the lighter phone, at 177 g against 197 g.
On paper, the two are closer than the brands suggest. On October 15, 2026, both cost $899 on their makers' stores, both start with 256 GB of storage, and both have a 6.3-inch OLED screen that refreshes at up to 120 Hz. Both are rated IP68, and in the US both are eSIM-only.
We haven't held either phone. Everything below comes from Apple's and Google's published spec sheets, store pages and support documents, which are listed at the end.

The table shows launch prices. Today's prices are below, and the iPhone's comes with a condition.
Price: the same $899, with a catch on the iPhone
The iPhone 17 launched at $799 in September 2025. Apple raised it to $899 on September 9, 2026, the day it announced the iPhone 18 Pro. That $899 includes a $30 discount that applies only if you activate the phone with AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon when you buy it. Bought unlocked without activation, the iPhone 17 is $929 on Apple's store.
The Pixel 11 launched at $899 in August 2026, and Google's store still lists it at $899 on October 15, 2026. Google sells it unlocked and in Verizon, AT&T and Google Fi versions.
Storage pricing tilts toward Google. The 512 GB iPhone 17 is $1,099 with carrier activation or $1,129 unlocked, and Google charges less than either for the 512 GB Pixel 11. If you're not sure whether to buy through a carrier at all, our guide to unlocked vs carrier phones walks through the trade-offs.
Cameras: only the Pixel has a zoom lens
The Pixel 11 has three rear cameras: a 48MP wide, a 13MP ultrawide and a 10.8MP 5x telephoto. The iPhone 17 has two: a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra wide. It has no telephoto lens.
That difference shows up with subjects you can't walk closer to, such as a kid on the far side of a soccer field or a band on a stage. The Pixel frames those at 5x through a dedicated lens. The iPhone zooms by cropping the image from its main camera.
What a spec sheet can't tell you is which phone takes the better photo. Megapixel counts don't settle that, and we haven't taken pictures with either phone. If photo quality is your deciding factor, look for an independent lab that publishes both its method and its sample images.
Updates: 7 years in writing vs no fixed promise
Google promises 7 years of Android, security and Pixel Drop updates for the Pixel 11. The clock starts at first availability on the US Google Store, which was August 2026, so support runs through about August 2033. Google doesn't publish an exact end date.
Apple doesn't publish a fixed number of years for the iPhone 17, or for any other iPhone. What it does publish is a list of phones that run its current software. According to Apple's iOS 27 page, iOS 27 still runs on the iPhone 11 from 2019. That's a track record, not a commitment.
If you keep a phone until the updates stop, only the Pixel tells you in advance roughly when that will be. Our guide on how long phones get updates compares every major brand's policy.
Battery and charging: two different yardsticks
Google lists the Pixel 11's battery at 4,985 mAh (typical) and rates it for 30+ hours of battery life. Apple doesn't publish the iPhone 17's battery capacity. It rates the phone for up to 30 hours of video playback.
Those two "30 hours" aren't the same measurement. Apple's figure covers video playback only, while Google's is a general battery-life rating. Because the makers measure different things, the numbers can't be lined up against each other.
For charging, both makers give time-to-charge figures instead of a maximum wattage. Apple says the iPhone 17 reaches up to 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W or stronger adapter. Google says the Pixel 11 reaches up to 55% in about 30 minutes with a 30W or stronger USB-C PPS charger. Both charge wirelessly at up to 25W: the iPhone through MagSafe and Qi2, the Pixel through Pixelsnap (Qi2.2).
Weight, memory and chips
The iPhone 17 weighs 177 g and the Pixel 11 weighs 197 g, with the same 6.3-inch screen size. If you use your phone one-handed for long stretches, that 20 g is worth knowing about.
Google lists 12 GB of RAM for the Pixel 11. Apple doesn't publish RAM for the iPhone 17, which is why its cell in that table row shows a dash. The chips are Apple's A19 and Google's Tensor G6, and we don't rank processor speed from spec sheets.
Software and the cost of switching
The Pixel 11 launched with Android 17, and the iPhone 17 runs iOS 27. For most buyers, though, the bigger question is what they're switching from. Apps you've paid for don't carry over between iOS and Android, an Apple Watch only pairs with an iPhone, and iMessage runs only on Apple devices.
If you already own several Apple devices, that usually decides it before any spec does. If you're coming from an older Android phone, the Pixel keeps you where you are. Our Pixel 11 overview covers what changed from the Pixel 10.
Who should buy which
- Pixel 11: you want a 5x zoom lens, a written update promise through about August 2033, or a 512 GB phone for less money.
- iPhone 17: you use a Mac, an iPad or an Apple Watch, most of your contacts are on iMessage, or you want the lighter of the two.
- Either one: both are sold for AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, and both are eSIM-only in the US, with support for two eSIMs.
- Neither: you want to keep using a physical SIM card. The Galaxy S26 still takes one; see our Galaxy S26 overview.
